This fishing themed slot is one of my all-time BTG favourites. The team has achieved a great risk-reward balance and with it earned it an important position in an otherwise impressive portfolio but where every other game lacks any kind of sympathy towards the player.
Base Game
Golden Catch is a MegaWays slot with reactions. Hence there are 117,649 dynamic ways to win as anywhere between 2—7 symbols will randomly drop per reel on each spin. In addition to one Wild symbol, you will want to watch out for four high-value fish, especially the purple one that pays up to 50x per full row. Unless you get lucky with the purple fish, all symbols pay very low through the entire game. If not for the fish prizes…
Fish Bonus
Every win in Golden Catch produces a reaction that generates fish. And every fish will be worth a certain amount of money. Fish bonus prizes are set up as follows:
- If the reel has 2 or 3 symbols, the fish appearing on the reel can be up to 500x stake
- If the reel has 4-5 symbols, the fish appearing on the reel can be up to 3x stake
- If the reel has 6-7 symbols, the fish appearing on the reel can be up to 1x stake.
Ironically, the bigger the symbols on the reels, the bigger the fish. To collect the prizes, however, you’ll need at least one boat that from time to time appear on top of the reels 2—5. Better yet, each boat can multiply wins by up to 10x. Get four Golden Boats and your catch will be worth 40x more. In the main bonus, there will be no multiplier limit on the boat, which is where it gets interesting.
Free Spins
Get 3 or more Scatters for 10 free spins, with +2 spins for each extra Scatter beyond the third. The brilliant thing about the bonus is that each new boat that comes up will have a higher multiplier. You can differentiate them as follows:
- Green boat: 1x—4x bet
- Blue boat: 5x—9x bet
- Red boat: 10x—14x bet
- Gold boat: 15x bet and above.
You will also have a chance to maximise your bonus catch with the existence of a re-trigger. For 3 more Scatters, you’ll get +4 free spins and +2 for each extra Scatter beyond the third. Get those few valuable spins after a long train of fishing boats to really make a killing.
As with most BTG slots, there is some griding to do before naturally unlocking the main bonus. However, with Golden Catch you’re more likely to trigger the main feature within a reasonable time limit like 250 spins, which makes it that much more attainable for mere mortals. That is more so the case with the additional Win Exchange feature.
Win Exchange
Win Exchange is a UK-friendly bonus buy alternative which you may have also seen in BTG slots like Apollo Pays and Wheel of Fortune. This is not to be confused with Feature Drop, like in Extra Chilli, where, as you may remember, the feature buy amount is decreasing with every Feature Drop symbol that you collect.
Here, if you win 25x—99x in the base game, which is rare, you can choose to exchange your money for a chance at winning the bonus which has a fixed cost of 100x. Any win that is less than that will be collected and proportionally allocated on the wheel of fortune. That means if you win 77x your take, you’ll have a 77% chance of winning the feature. Any win beyond 100x can also be exchanged for a guaranteed bonus, with all credit beyond than credited to your account as a regular win. So technically, you’ll be buying the bonus, which you can now also do through a separate Bonus Buy.
Bonus Buy
Golden Catch is the first Big Time Gaming slot with a dedicated Bonus Buy option. In addition to the Win Exchange, any player who has access to this version of the game can purchase the Free Spins bonus for 100x their bet. With the given betting range, this can be as low as £20 and as high as £1,500 at the maximum stake. As to be expected, it won’t be available in the UK due to regulatory reasons.
Conclusion
Golden Catch not only aims to take the Bonanza crown but also kick some ass in among all fishing slots. And if Nik Robinson’s (founder and CEO at BTG) words are of any importance to you, this is one of his top slots to date. Big winning combos come with a catch in this game though, literally, which must be picked by a boat to count. No boat, no fish prizes, lacklustre wins. This type of dynamic will produce very marginal symbol wins that can be very painful and unnatural to watch at times. But this is also what makes it so interesting to play – you never know how many fish each win will produce nor how many boats will sail to pick them up for a possibly nice bounty. From my experience at least, there are plenty of fish in this game (more so than in most other BTG slots), but want to come prepared to sacrifice some of that bait as tides can turn quickly. My biggest catch so far is just over 2,000x bet.
