Nitropolis 3 is a clever mix-up of two popular slot series that is best reserved for heavyweight slot-heads. Yet the bang for the buck element is still deeply engraved into the post-apocalyptic genre, so it deserves to be included in casual plays as well.
Base Game
Until now and as we mentioned in the Nitropolis 2 review, the series was all about Nitro Reels and win re-spins. This has changed as Nitropolis 3 takes on an updated yet proven format by introducing progressively growing reels. You start playing on a 4Ă—6 reel-set with 4,096 ways to win, which can grow vertically as high as 8 rows and 263,144 ways to win. With the addition of Nitro Reels, that can grow into millions of ways!
Avalanches
To grow one extra row on top of the existing 4, you only need a single win explosion. That will cause the winning symbols to explode, except for Nitro Reels, and create space for new icons that will fall from above. This can continue indefinitely.
Nitro Reels & Big Symbols
Nitro Reels are special symbol clusters that can contain up to 12 identical symbols each, while covering only 2-6 standard symbol positions. Furthermore, in addition to the 12 regular stackable symbols (that pay up to 5x bet for 6-oak), there is now a thing called a Big Symbol. These oversized symbols can come in super 2Ă—2, mega 3Ă—3 and epic 4Ă—4 sizes. This includes the wild symbol, which counts as the highest value symbol when covering a full pay-line.
The advantage of Big Symbols or even the new Big Nitro Reels is that it will cover more than one reel, so it should make it easier to trigger a win from left to right. For example, a 3Ă—3 symbol on the leftmost reel will cover 3 reels at the same time and will automatically trigger a win.
As a compromise to the new format, ELK Studios has ditched the “booster row” on top of the reels. However, the Nitro Boosters are still very much there.
Nitro Boosters
Although the slot’s concept has changed a little in structure, Nitro Features can still make up a large chunk of gameplay wins. Their quantity has been modified to be less confusing but it’s all quite similar to the second release:
- Nitro Match – picks a symbol to match an adjacent reel.
- Nitro Upgrade – expands and upgrades Nitro Reel symbols.
- Nitro Wild – replaces all symbols in Nitro Reels to Wild symbols.
- Both Ways – all winnings paid in both directions.
- Re-drop – all symbols re-drop except for the Bonus and Nitro symbols (activated when there are no more wins).
Keep in mind unlike Nitropolis 2, all Nitro Boosters will apply to Nitro Reels that are on the same or adjacent reels only. The good news is that the Nitro feature symbols, Redrop and Both Ways symbols can randomly flip over and trigger an additional feature once their initial feature has been performed!
Free Spins Bonus
Get 3 or more bonus symbols to trigger the free spins feature. The more, the merrier:
- 3 bonus symbols – 8 free spins
- 4 bonus symbols – 12 free spins
- 5 bonus symbols – 16 free spins
- 6 bonus symbols – 20 free spins.
During the bonus, all Nitro Reels are sticky. During the bonus, there are also so-called safety levels, so the rows will be raised after each successful spin. If you win, every new free spin will start with an extra row that can reach a maximum of 8.
The bonus can be retriggered with 3 or more bonus symbols. Likewise, if one of the bonus symbols is the Super Bonus symbol, then the game advances to the ultimate free spins.
Super Bonus Game

Conclusion
The Nitropolis 3 slot lives up to the drama which the entire series has not failed to deliver over the course of two years. While this can be quite frustrating, especially for beginners, it can be interesting to follow once you complete the puzzle. The fact that ELK Studios has replaced the format with the one that closely resembles their Gold series is only for the better for all the fans. As such, the new addition to Nitropolis is not a replacement of their old games but a continuation and enhancement of the original Nitro Reels mechanic.
